Celestial Navigation (200 tons)
    course (COLPAC-104)

This course will satisfy the Celestial Navigation exam
requirements for adding "All Oceans" to an
endorsement as Master or Mate 200 tons or less; OR
to a license as Master or Mate of Fishing Industry
Vessels.

Subjects include calculations for the time of sunset,
sunrise, local apparent noon and latitude by local
apparent noon; application of corrections for index
error and light refraction to the sextant altitude to
determine the observed altitude of the sun; sight
reductions for observations of the sun to determine
the azimuth and intercept; application of universal plot
sheets to determine DR positions and running fixes;
determining magnetic compass deviation from
observations of the sun.

Prerequisites courses or endorsements.
  • An endorsement as Master or Mate 200 tons or
    less, Master or Mate of Fishing Vessels,
    Apprentice Mate (steersman), or course
    completion certificate is required.

$1,200, including the $100 scheduling fee.

USCG approval:
    Any applicant who has successfully completed
    your 60-hour Celestial Navigation (200 Tons)
    course and who presents your Certificate of
    Training WITHIN ONE YEAR of the completion of
    training, will satisfy the celestial navigation
    examination requirements of 46 CFR 10.215(c)
    and 10.401(d) for adding an “Upon Oceans”
    endorsement to any deck license up to Master
    Not More Than 200 Gross Tons, or to a license as
    Master or Mate of Uninspected Fishing Industry
    Vessels.

Course Registration and Schedule

This course is scheduled over eight consecutive days,
Monday through Monday (including the weekend) from
8AM through 5PM.

Registration is on the first day of the class and requires
a photo ID and full payment for the class. Acceptable
methods of payment are cash, check or credit card
(Visa or MasterCard).

This course is taught in a self-study formate and
scheduled one student at a time as classroom space is
available. We can generally schedule this class with a
few days of advance notice.
