Officer endorsements as Master or Mate 200 tons or less are issued as 150 or 200 tons depending on the qualifying experience of the applicant. This is a most common endorsement held by captains of small crew boats, supply boats, small oil spill response vessels and small passenger vessels including the popular 12-pack uninspected passenger vessel.
Master authorizes the mariner to serve as captain on any inspected vessel or uninspected passenger vessel (OUPV) within the limitations on the endorsement.
Mate authorizes the mariner to serve as second captain on any inspected vessel or uninpsected passenger vessel within the limitations on the endorsement or as Operator of Uninspected Passenger Vessel (OUPV).
An Inland Route includes all inland waters of the US.
Master 200 tons or less with an inland route requires 360 days of qualifying experience on power-driven vessels; at least 180 days of the qualifying experience must have been as master or mate while holding any domestic officers endorsement.
Mate 200 tons or less license with an inland route requires 180 days of qualifying experience on power-driven vessels.
A Near Coastal Route includes all inland waters of the US and all near coastal ocean waters within 200 miles of the coast.
Master 200 tons or less with a near coastal route requires 720 days of qualifying experience on power-driven vessels; at least 360 days must have been on near coastal or ocean water; at least 360 days of the qualifying experience must have been as master or mate while holding any domestic officers endorsement.
Mate 200 tons or less with a near coastal route requires 360 days of qualifying experience on power-driven vessels; at least 180 days of the qualifying experience must have been on ocean or near coastal waters.
An Ocean Route includes all inland waters of the US and all ocean waters.

Tonnage Limitations
Tonnage limitations on Master or Mate endorsements of 200 tons and less are based on the size of vessels the qualifying experience of the applicant was on. There are no requirements that any of the following experience be as Master or Mate.
A 150 ton limitation will be issued if either 50% or more of the qualifying experience was on documented vessels of greater than 67 gross tons or at least 25% of the qualifying experience was on documented vessels of greater than 100 gross tons.
A 200 ton limitation will be issued if either 50% or more of the qualifying experience was on documented vessels of greater than 100 gross tons or at least 25% of the qualifying experience was on documented vessels of greater than 150 gross tons.
Upgrade Information
Upgrading from Mate to Master or increasing the tonnage limitation from 150 to 200 tons can be accomplished by sea service experience alone, no additional exams or training is required.
